Every piece begins with the question an architect asks first: what does it need to be? Its structure, proportions and materials follow from the answer.
Our principles
Three ideas behind every piece
Structure first
We work out how a piece stands, carries weight and meets the floor before we think about its surface. The form follows from the structure.
Chosen for how they age
We choose materials for how they look, feel and age, not just how they arrive, and we finish them to show their grain, veining and colour.
Nothing without a reason
Every line, joint and edge has a reason to be there. If a detail does not help a piece work, or sit better in a room, we leave it out.
Materials
What our pieces are made of
Metal
Stainless steel and bronze, polished, brushed, patinated or lacquered, where a piece needs sharp lines and a strong frame.
Wood
American walnut and grey ash, with veneers of figured woods such as walnut burl, ziricote and Macassar ebony, chosen for their grain.
Stone
Marbles such as Statuario, Verde Alpi and Nero Marquina, chosen for the colour and movement of their veins.
Upholstery
Bouclé, velvet, mohair, chenille and suede, as well as leather, chosen first for how they feel.
Wood, stone and patinas vary naturally, so every piece is slightly different from the next, and from its photos.
The making
Precision and the hand
In our workshop, machines take on the work that needs exact precision, such as cutting. Shaping, finishing and assembly are done by hand, where a trained eye still matters most.
